These are what we use for awesome dry ice cocktails – and they keep us safe!  The Misty Stix are like a plastic stir stick with a chamber.  You place a dry ice nugget into the chamber and click it shut.  One nugget lasts around 7 minutes in a drink.  The Penguin Stix are a stainless steel version that come in 3 different colours – gold, rose gold and multi-coloured.  These are a step up and longer lasting, classier version.

Pick them up in our store for $2.50 and $5.00 each, or order them with your dry ice delivery below.

Fun & Household Applications

PARTY, THEATER, CONCERT FOG

Dry ice when combined with hot water will produce bubbling water and thick fog. Great for Halloween parties!

HALLOWEEN PARTIES

This is our busiest time of year!  Check back with us for specials and extended hours. Click here for some great party tricks!

SCHOOL & SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS

There are many fun, creative science projects and experiments to be used in schools.  Volcanoes, cloud chambers, comets, making baking soda, observing sublimation, and gaseous expansion are some common school science projects.

Accelerated Plant Growth

A small quantity of CO2 will increase the growth rate of plants.  Allow the dry ice to sublimate in close proximity to the plants for 10-15 minutes daily.

Broken Freezer & Fridge

Use dry ice to keep freezer and refrigerator contents frozen during breakdowns.

CAMPING

Dry ice provides the most effective and inexpensive means to keep perishables chilled or frozen.

CANNABIS EXTRACTION

Dry ice is used to extract cannabinoids from the leaves and stems of a cannabis plant.  The result is a powdery substance (known as kief) that can then be compressed into “hash” or used to make butter for “edibles”.  Click to read this article about “dry ice hash”.

CHEMOTHERAPY

Many cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments have found the use of super cooled “cold caps” to be an effective way to reduce or prevent hair loss.

Carbonation

Liquid co2 is normally used for this, but dry ice can be used to carbonate liquids, refill sodastream cannisters and carbonating fruit!

Fishing/hunting

Keeps your animal or fish chilled with dry ice will ensure minimal spoilage during transportation.

Freezing Fresh Fruit

Place dry ice in the bottom of your cooler and the fruit directly on top.  Close cooler and let fruits freeze for 20-30 minutes.  Remove fruit and place in freezer safe plastic bags as needed.

Kills Clothes Moths

Dry ice, when combined with heavy plastic bags can kill moths, larvae, and eggs through fumigation.  Place clothes for fumigation in a plastic bag (at least 3mm thick).  Wrap 5 pounds of dry ice in a towel/rag and place inside the bag.  Seal the bag but ensure there is enough space for the sublimation to escape rather than building pressure.  20-30 minutes should be adequate time to finish the job.

Gopher Eradication

Gophers are cute little critters, but they destroy crops and pastures meant for grazing.  Conventional methods involve using poison that kill other animals (dogs) and are terrible for the environment.  Dry ice is chemical free and simply puts the gophers to sleep in their holes before it disappears.  Contact us for more info!

Wholesale

If you require 500 lbs per week or more, our wholesale program may make sense for you. This represents 80% of our business. We ship our pellets and nuggets and now bricks to customers throughout Western Canada, and especially Southern Alberta. We also provide Calgary deliveries with our dedicated truck.

Our containers hold @ 500 lbs each, they are sold by the full container (we don’t sell half full containers). They are designed specifically for dry ice; it will only disappear (sublimate) at a rate of @ 4% per day (based on manufacturer testing). We offer delivery and need the empty containers back within 1-2 weeks. Pricing depends on a few things; please give us a call.

Benefits

It's environmentally safe

Dry ice can serve as an eco-friendly alternative to a lot of damaging solvents or hazardous chemicals! It doesn’t leave behind any harmful secondary wastes as it evaporates, resulting in a safe and easy clean-up.

Keeps your food cool

Whether you need to keep your food cool for catering or other event purposes, going out camping for a weekend, or need to preserve your rewards from hunting or fishing trip, dry ice is your best option for safely keeping meat, berries, fruit, and more fresh.

Won't leave everything wet

Unlike regular ice, dry ice won’t leave a soggy mess when it melts away. Since it is made out of frozen carbon dioxide, dry ice goes through sublimation, meaning it goes from a solid to a gaseous form.

Easy to handle

While you should refrain from ingesting it or touching it with your bare hands for too long, dry ice is easy to use. Wear a pair of gloves, and dry ice use can be as easy as pouring hot water over it or applying it to specific surfaces. Always do your research first!

Industrial & Commercial Applications

BROKEN COMMERCIAL FREEZER

Use dry ice to keep freezer contents frozen during breakdowns.

BROKEN WALK-IN COOLER

Use dry ice to keep refrigerator contents cool during breakdowns.

CANNABIS EXTRACTION

Dry ice is used to extract cannabinoids from the leaves and stems of a cannabis plant. This “extraction” agent is popular for the home grower, right up to large producers.

COMMERCIAL TANK REPAIR

Dry ice will remove oxygen from flammable containment tanks if placed inside, reducing the risk of flammable vapors catching spark and exploding.

DE-FLASHING MOLDED PLASTICS

Dry ice causes molecules in plastic and rubber to band closer together and “shrink”.

DRY ICE BLASTING

Dry ice blasting is how Calgary Dry Ice came to exist!   We are experts in this area, and many of our wholesale customers buy dry ice for this purpose.

FREEZING / TRANSPORTING FISH

Dry ice can be used to flash freeze fish, ensuring freshness and prolonging preservation time by up to ten days longer than regular ice.

FREEZE BRANDING CATTLE

This is a way to mark livestock ownership. Instead of hurting and scarring the cattle, freeze-branding causes the hair follicles to produce white hair. This creates a highly visible brand without a scar.

FRESH MEAT PROCESSING

Dry ice will keep the temperature cold and reduce spoilage while processing meat.  This is used in industrial processing of ground meats and sausages.

INERTING MEDIUM

Dry ice will replace oxygen in a container preventing or extinguishing fires.  The most common use is for safely removing underground gas storage tanks.

MEDICAL USES & TRANSPORT

There are a number of applications in the medical field.  Doctors will often use dry ice to freeze and remove warts or other skin imperfections.  Temperature sensitive medical supplies, samples, and equipment are also commonly transported with dry ice as a cooling agent.

PLUMBING

Dry ice can be used to freeze pipes, essentially stopping the flow of water at point of contact.  This method is very useful if you are unable to access the main shutoff valve.  Once the pipes are frozen, proceed with repairs.

ROOFING

Dry ice will freeze gooey tar and help with removing certain roofing materials.

SHRINK METAL FITTING

Dry ice works wonders for metal shrinking and fitting.

Mosquitos

Mosquitos are attracted to both animals and humans is because when exhaling, we produce small amounts of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). As dry ice sublimes to CO2 gas, it is equivalent to over 1,000 people breathing at the same time in a close proximity.  Place 5-10 pounds pieces of dry ice away from areas where people are gathered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is "Dry" Ice?

Dry ice is the solid form of C02 – basically, we have a machine that forces it into a solid form by using pressure. Because of this, it’s perishable – it’s really starting to disappear and degrade as soon as we make it! That cool fog you see from dry ice is really that solid state transforming back into a gas. It doesn’t “melt” and turn into a liquid like regular ice.

How Do I Store It, and How Long Will it Last?

A couple of things you can do to slow down this “disappearing” process:

  1. IDEALLY – Pick it up from us the day you’ll be using it.
  2. Bring a camping cooler when you pick it up and keep it in a cool area. Even this will only keep it around for a couple days at the most. You’ll likely lose @ 50% in 24 hours. Sorry, you’ll have to order extra if you need it on the weekend. Do not store it in the freezer – it might trick your thermostat and turn it off!  And it will disappear anyway. The best place to store it is in that camping cooler.  Having said that, our bricks last a long time – up to 7 days!

What Are Your Business Hours?

Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and Saturdays 10am – 2pm (summer only).

Can I Show Up to Buy It, or Should I Call/Email First?

Unless you need over 150 lbs, just come in – we always have nuggets on hand and bricks as well during camping season.  For larger orders you may want to call ahead to avoid waiting for it.  We make it here and we won’t run out!

Do You Offer Delivery?

Yes!  We offer delivery for wholesale and retail within Calgary.  Just click on the “order for delivery” button above and our current rates are on the next page.

Please contact us for wholesale delivery rates.

Do You Sell Wholesale Quantities?

Yes! This is @ 80% of our business. We sell it by the 500 lb container of pellets, nuggets and bricks (custom sizes available) and offer dedicated delivery. Please contact us for details and pricing.

What's Dry Ice Used For?

Dry Ice is widely used because it is simple to freeze and easy to handle—it’s perfect for temperature sensitive shipping solutions.  Our dry ice is purchased by special effects companies, laboratories, photographers, catering companies, freight companies, even campers and fishermen!  It has cannabis applications as well.

Are There Any Safety Concerns?

  • Dry ice has a surface temperature of -78 degrees Celsius.
  • Not wearing gloves when handling the product could result in frostbite.
  • Always keep dry ice away from children.
  • Do not swallow, or put dry ice in your mouth.
  • Do not put dry ice in anyone’s clothing for fun. Potentially severe frostbite may occur as a result of prolonged contact with the skin.
  • Do not place dry ice inside an air tight container. Sublimed vapors will increase the interior pressure and will rupture the container.
  • Place a thick layer of cardboard, Styrofoam or similar separator between food and liquid products which need to be chilled. Food and liquid products in containers will freeze when their container is placed in contact with dry ice over a short period of time.
  • Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide that expands to a gas. You can lose consciousness by directly breathing in the dry ice vapors for an extended period of time. You will sense carbon dioxide by a “tingling” sensation in the mouth.

About Us

Bryan Hawley started Scrub Zero Dry Ice Cleaning in 2005.   By 2015, it made sense for Scrub Zero to produce its own dry ice, and we started selling it the same year.  In 2019, we changed the name to Calgary Dry Ice Ltd. to better describe that side of the business.

In 2020, Covid was the nail in the coffin for Scrub Zero, and we no longer perform dry ice blasting services.  Instead, we invested in a new machine that makes dry ice slabs! We can now produce over 1800 lbs per hour in 3 different formats!

Calgary Dry Ice Ltd. is the only producer of dry ice in Southern Alberta.  We feel there are many uses for dry ice that haven’t evolved locally, just because it hasn’t been readily available. While we feel there is great growth potential for retail dry ice ice, our main business is our wholesale customers (500 lb containers). Please contact us for pricing.
